This course systematically traces the development of design from the Industrial Revolution to the present, exploring the social, economic, technological, and cultural drivers behind the evolution of design styles. The curriculum covers important historical periods and movements including the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Bauhaus, Modernism, International Style, Postmodernism, and digital-era design, with in-depth analysis of representative figures, classic works, and design philosophies of each period. Through case studies and discussions, students build a complete design history knowledge framework, understand the interactive relationship between design and its era, and develop historical perspective and critical thinking, providing theoretical reference and intellectual resources for contemporary design practice.

Final Project

Students select a design style or historical movement for in-depth research and write an academic paper of approximately 5,000 words analyzing the historical background, core characteristics, representative figures and works, historical influence, and contemporary value of the style. Building on this research, students select a contemporary design object—such as product packaging, a mobile app interface, or a poster—and redesign it using the studied historical style, creating a design work that integrates historical elements with contemporary needs. Both the research paper and the redesign work are submitted; the paper requires proper annotations and references, and the design work is accompanied by a design statement explaining the translation strategy of the historical style.
