Personal Statement

个人陈述

General framework · 500-1000 words

Overview 个人陈述概述

个人陈述是用第一人称讲述"我是谁、我为何申请、我能带来什么"的核心文书。

A Personal Statement is a first-person essay that tells the admissions committee who you are, why you are applying, and what you will contribute. It is used across US, UK and other overseas application systems in slightly different forms. Unlike a transcript or test score, it reveals personality, motivation and fit through a coherent personal narrative. Length typically falls in the 500-1000 word range, and the focus is on showing growth and reflection rather than listing achievements.

Empty emotion (空洞抒情)Big claims ("I am passionate") without concrete evidence to back them up
Resume in prose (流水账)Listing activities chronologically without reflection or theme
Over-ambitious scope (贪多)Trying to cover too many stories; depth beats breadth
Tone mismatch (语气不当)Too formal, too casual, or overly dramatic; aim for genuine and reflective
Ignoring the prompt (偏离题目)Writing a strong essay that does not actually answer the question asked
