IB Chemistry is a two-year secondary chemistry course offered by IBO, available at both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). The course builds a coherent framework of matter and reactions across stoichiometry, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox, organic chemistry and analytical techniques. HL extends each of these areas with greater quantitative depth and spectroscopic analysis. A core subject for chemistry, medicine, biology, materials and chemical engineering applicants.

The IB Chemistry IA is an individual experimental investigation worth 20% of the final grade. Students formulate a research question, design and conduct an experiment or data analysis, and produce a 6-12 page report (~10 hours of work). Assessment criteria cover personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation, and communication. Topics may include synthesis, titration, kinetics or spectroscopic analysis.
