This course delves into core topics of cultural anthropology including kinship, economic anthropology, political anthropology, religion, gender, and sexuality. Students read classic ethnographies to understand social organization, value systems, and life practices across cultures. The course emphasizes cultural relativism, developing cross-cultural sensitivity and analytical skills for applying ethnographic methods to contemporary social issues.

Select a specific community or group (immigrant community, occupational group, interest-based community, etc.) and conduct six weeks of fieldwork. Collect data through participant observation and in-depth interviews, then write a 5000-word ethnographic report covering social structure, cultural customs, and values, analyzed using at least one cultural anthropology theory.
