The ACT is a standardized test administered by ACT Inc. and accepted by all US four-year colleges alongside the SAT. It assesses English, mathematics, reading and scientific reasoning, with an optional Writing section. Unlike the SAT, the ACT includes a dedicated Science section that evaluates interpretation and analysis of scientific data rather than recall of scientific facts.

The ACT consists of four required multiple-choice sections: English (45 min, 75 questions), Mathematics (60 min, 60 questions), Reading (35 min, 40 questions), and Science (35 min, 40 questions). The optional Writing section (40 min) requires a single essay response. The tight pacing, particularly in Science and Reading, makes time management the most common challenge for test-takers.

Each of the four required sections is scored on a 1-36 scale; the Composite score is the rounded average of these four section scores. The optional Writing test receives a separate 2-12 score and does not affect the Composite. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question. Subscores provide additional detail but are not typically used in admission decisions.

The ACT is offered approximately seven times per year, typically in September, October, December, February, April, June and July. Registration is handled through the ACT website, with both paper-based and online testing options available depending on the country. Score reports are released within two to eight weeks, with online scores typically available first.

ACT preparation should prioritize pacing drills, as the per-question time is shorter than on the SAT.
