The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. It is the leading English proficiency test for Commonwealth countries and is widely accepted by US institutions as well. The exam is offered in two formats: Academic for higher education applications and General Training for work, migration and secondary education purposes; undergraduate applicants take the Academic module.

The IELTS Academic test consists of four sections: Listening (30 min, 40 questions across four recordings), Reading (60 min, 40 questions across three long academic passages), Writing (60 min, two tasks: a chart/graph description and an argumentative essay), and Speaking (11-14 min, a face-to-face interview with an examiner covering personal questions, a long turn and a discussion). The Listening, Reading and Writing sections are completed on the same day, while Speaking may be scheduled up to a week before or after.

Each section receives a band score from 0 to 9 in 0.5 increments. The overall band score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. Most Commonwealth universities require an overall band of 6.0-7.5 for undergraduate admission, often with minimum sectional requirements. Band descriptors for Writing and Speaking are publicly available and useful for self-assessment during preparation.

The paper-based IELTS is offered on 48 fixed dates per year, while the computer-delivered version is available on many more dates throughout the year. Registration is handled through the British Council or IDP websites depending on the region. Official results are released 13 days after the paper test and 3-5 days after the computer test, and are valid for two years from the test date.

IELTS preparation benefits from understanding the public band descriptors and practicing with official Cambridge past papers. Speaking preparation should focus on extended answers, fluency and pronunciation rather than memorized templates, since the test is conducted face-to-face with an examiner. Writing requires clear paragraph structure and accurate task fulfillment: Task 1 demands precise data reporting, while Task 2 rewards well-supported arguments and lexical range.
