PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a computer-based English language proficiency test administered by Pearson PLC. PTE Academic consists of three main parts: Speaking & Writing (54-67 min), Reading (29-30 min), and Listening (30-43 min), with an optional 10-minute break between Reading and Listening. The test features 20 different question types, many of which are integrated-such as Read Aloud (speaking + reading), Repeat Sentence (listening + speaking), and Summarize Written Text (reading + writing). The fully computer-delivered format means test-takers use a headset and microphone for speaking tasks and type all written responses.

Scores range from 10 to 90, with each 10-point band roughly corresponding to a CEFR level (e.g., 43-50 = B1, 59-64 = B2, 76-84 = C1). The automated scoring system evaluates over 50 features of speech and writing, including grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency and discourse structure. Because scoring is entirely machine-based, results are consistent and typically available within 48 hours. Competitive US undergraduate programs often require a PTE score of 58-68 or above, equivalent to approximately TOEFL 90-100 or IELTS 6.5-7.0.

Official scores are typically released within 48 hours, making PTE one of the fastest-scoring major English proficiency exams.
