Steps
Step 1
Color Theory Study & Research
The core task of this step is to systematically learn color theory knowledge and conduct extensive research, laying theoretical and material foundations for subsequent color design. Color design is not subjective choice based on feeling, but professional decision-making based on color science and psychology. Through in-depth theoretical study and extensive inspiration collection, establish scientific color cognition and rich color aesthetic reserves.
• Study and sort out basic color theory, including three elements of color (hue, value, saturation), color mixing principles, color contrast and harmony, color systems (CMYK/RGB/Pantone) and other core knowledge
• Conduct extensive color inspiration collection, draw inspiration from nature, art, architecture, fashion, photography and other fields, build mood boards, categorize and organize color combinations of different styles
• Study color psychology and color culturology, understand emotional associations, symbolic meanings and cultural differences of different colors, analyze target audience's color preferences and psychological feelings
Deliverable: Color research and inspiration library (including theory study notes, mood boards, color psychology analysis, competitor color research) | Quality standard: Solid theoretical foundation, rich inspiration collection, in-depth analysis
Step 2
Color Strategy & Style Positioning
This step focuses on determining the color strategy and style positioning of the brand/project, solving the core questions of "what colors to use" and "why use these colors." Color strategy is an important component of brand visual strategy, directly affecting the brand's emotional expression and audience cognition. Based on brand tone and target audience, develop clear color positioning and strategic direction.
• Analyze brand/project positioning and target audience,结合 color psychology determine emotional tone of colors (such as tech sense, affinity, high-end sense, vitality, etc.), write color strategy brief
• Study industry color conventions and competitor color schemes, find differentiated color opportunities, while considering balance between brand recognition and industry applicability
• Determine color style direction, collect reference cases, establish visual reference system for color style, clarify aesthetic standards and expected effects of design
Deliverable: Color strategy positioning document (including brand analysis, target audience color preferences, color strategy, style references) | Quality standard: Accurate strategic positioning, clear color direction, high matching degree with brand tone
Step 3
Color Scheme Design & Optimization
This step is the core creative phase of color design, designing a complete color system using professional color matching methods. Good color matching should not only be aesthetic but also functional and systematic. Through scientific color matching methods and repeated debugging and optimization, create color schemes with both aesthetic value and practical value.
• Apply professional color matching methods for palette design, including monochromatic, analogous, contrast, complementary, split complementary, triadic and other classic color matching modes
• Design color system structure, including selection and proportion allocation of primary colors, auxiliary colors, accent colors, establish hierarchical relationship and usage specifications of colors, ensure system integrity and scalability
• Perform color harmony and optimization, adjust lightness, purity, hue of colors, handle harmonious relationship between colors, use color contrast theory to ensure clarity and readability of information transmission
Deliverable: Color system design proposal (including primary and auxiliary color system, color scheme, color proportion, design explanation) | Quality standard: Harmonious and beautiful color matching, complete system structure, creative and expressive
Step 4
Color Application Testing & Verification
This step verifies feasibility and effect of the color scheme through practical application testing, ensuring colors achieve expected effects in different scenarios. Color performance is affected by multiple factors such as medium, material, light, size, etc. Theoretically perfect color matching may have various problems in practical application. Through multi-scenario testing and iterative optimization, ensure practicality and reliability of the color scheme.
• Conduct color application testing, apply color scheme to typical design scenarios such as interface design, graphic design, product design, spatial design, etc., check performance of colors in different scenarios
• Perform accessibility testing, including color blindness friendliness test (red-green color blindness, blue-yellow color blindness), contrast test (WCAG standard), ensure barrier-free information transmission
• Test performance differences of colors on different media, including screen display (RGB), printing (CMYK), material application, etc., perform color correction and cross-media color management
Deliverable: Color application test report (including scenario application test, accessibility test, cross-media test, optimization suggestions) | Quality standard: Comprehensive and detailed testing, stable color performance, meets requirements of various application scenarios
Step 5
Color System Manual Production
This step is the concluding phase of color design, organizing all color design results into a systematic color design manual. The color manual is the standard guide for color usage, ensuring the team has rules to follow when using colors, maintaining consistency and professionalism of brand colors. A standardized and complete manual is an important deliverable of professional color design.
• Create color system manual, systematically introducing color design concepts, color emotional positioning, color system composition, color usage guidelines, etc., presenting complete design logic in an illustrated format
• Develop detailed color usage specifications, including color values (Hex/RGB/CMYK/Pantone), usage proportion, matching principles, prohibited situations, FAQ and other practical content
• Provide color tools and resources, including swatch files (ASE/ACO), design software color configuration, quick reference cards, etc., convenient for daily work use
Deliverable: Color design system manual (including complete manual, swatch files, usage specifications, tool resources) | Quality standard: Complete and clear manual structure, detailed and practical specifications, complete and professional deliverables
