This course provides in-depth study of typographic principles and application techniques of text as a visual element. The curriculum covers core knowledge including the history of type, typeface classification and characteristics, kerning and leading, paragraph typesetting, grid systems, and information hierarchy construction, while addressing cutting-edge topics such as Chinese-English mixed typesetting and responsive typography. Through extensive typography exercises and practical projects, students master the logic of font selection, the rhythm and cadence of typesetting, and the integrated design of text and graphics. The course emphasizes the balance between reading experience and visual aesthetics, cultivating students' professional ability to use text for effective visual communication.

Students design a complete typesetting system for a fictional academic journal, including all content sections such as cover, table of contents, body pages, columns, and advertisement pages. A systematic font hierarchy and grid system must be established, standardizing typesetting rules for different text elements such as titles, subtitles, body text, quotations, and annotations, ensuring unified style and good readability throughout the journal. A complete journal sample of at least 24 pages is submitted, along with a typography style guide detailing the rationale for font selection, grid system design, color system, and layout specifications for each element, demonstrating deep understanding of the systematic nature of typographic design.
