Steps
Step 1
Observation Training & Material Collection
The core task of this step is to conduct systematic observation training and collect creative materials, laying modeling foundation for sketch creation. Sketching is the foundation of plastic arts, and observation is the soul of sketching. Through scientific observation method training, cultivate correct observation habits and keen visual perception ability, while collecting rich creative materials.
• Conduct observation method training, learn overall observation method, comparative observation method, geometric induction method, practice seeing shapes instead of objects, seeing negative shapes, seeing relationships, break away from conceptualized painting habits, establish scientific observation system
• Perform sketching from life exercises, including still life sketching, plaster cast sketching, portrait sketching, human body sketching, landscape sketching, etc., practice basic modeling abilities such as composition, form, light and shade, structure, space, texture
• Collect creative materials, record touching scenes, characters, objects in life through sketching, photography, text recording, etc., build personal material library, accumulate materials for thematic creation
Deliverable: Sketch exercises and material library (including observation training notes, life sketch exercises, creative material collection) | Quality standard: Scientific observation methods, solid modeling ability, rich material collection
Step 2
Theme Determination & Composition Design
This step focuses on determining sketch creation theme and conducting composition design, solving the problems of "what to draw" and "how to lay out." A good sketch creation requires not only solid techniques but also touching themes and clever composition. Through in-depth thematic thinking and multi-scheme composition exploration, find the most expressive creative proposal.
• Determine creation theme, find inspiration from personal experience, social life, literary works, natural landscapes, determine theme, emotional tone and ideological connotation of creation, write creative conception statement
• Conduct composition exploration, drawnumerous Thumbnails, try different composition methods (symmetrical, triangular composition, S-shaped composition, diagonal composition, frame composition, etc.), study picture division, rhythm, balance, visual guidance
• Determine final composition scheme, choose 2-3 promising compositions for enlarged drawing, compare visual effects and theme expression of each proposal, determine final composition, perspective and picture proportion
Deliverable: Creative conception and composition drafts (including theme description, composition exploration drafts, final composition) | Quality standard: Profound theme, creative composition, good visual effect
Step 3
Sketch Block-in & Structure Building
This step is the official beginning phase of sketch creation, from block-in to establishing overall relationships of the picture. Block-in and structure building are the skeleton of sketching, determining the overall framework and basic pattern of the work. Accurate modeling and rigorous structure are the foundation of a good sketch, requiring rational analysis and judgment to establish the basic order of the picture.
• Light line block-in and positioning, use long straight lines to generalize large forms and positions, determine basic framework of composition, check proportion, position, movement of the picture, ensure large form relationships are accurate
• Conduct structural analysis, apply geometric form induction method, decompose complex forms into basic geometric bodies (cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, etc.), understand internal structure and intersection relationships of forms
• Establish light and shade big relationships, lay overall tone, distinguish light-receiving and back-light two major systems, establish overall relationship of black, white, gray three major surfaces and five major tones of the picture, establish light and shade levels
Deliverable: Sketch structure draft (including block-in line drawing, structural analysis, big relationship lay-in) | Quality standard: Accurate modeling, rigorous structure, clear big relationships
Step 4
Deep Modeling & Texture Expression
This step is the core deepening phase of sketch creation, conducting detailed depiction and texture expression on the basis of big relationships. Deep modeling is the key reflection of sketching level, requiring exquisite techniques and keen observation. Through richly layered light-dark transitions and precise texture expression, make the picture realistic and appealing.
• Deepen modeling from whole to parts, first draw main objects and visual center, then gradually deepen secondary parts, through层层叠加 tones, sculpt volume sense, spatial sense and weight sense of forms
• Express texture of different materials, for different materials such as skin, hair, fabric, metal, glass, ceramic, wood, adopt different hatching methods, brush stroke processing and light-dark contrast, express respective texture characteristics
• Use different sketching techniques, such as hatching, smudging, stump work, scraping, reserving white space, etc., combine use of pencils of different hardness, charcoal, erasers, stumps and other tools, enrich expressive language of sketching
Deliverable: Detailed sketch draft (including deep modeling, texture expression, technique exploration) | Quality standard: In-depth modeling, vivid texture, rich layers
Step 5
Overall Adjustment & Work Completion
This step is the concluding phase of sketch creation, conducting final overall adjustment and picture improvement. Overall adjustment requires stepping back to look at the picture, focusing on the big picture, checking overall relationships, making necessary strengthening and weakening, making the picture more complete and artistically appealing. Final adjustment can often greatly improve the overall level of the work.
• Conduct overall observation and adjustment, observe the work from a distance, check overall light-dark relationship, virtual-real relationship, primary-secondary relationship, spatial relationship, strengthen contrast, highlight subject, weaken secondary parts, make the picture more unified
• Handle edge lines and details, carefully handle contour lines and edge virtuality of objects, adjust details of key parts, make the picture both unified and with wonderful detail highlights, achieving "whole but not empty, detailed but not chaotic"
• Complete the work and organize, sign name and date, properly preserve and mount the work, write creative insights and reflection, summarize experience and lessons from this creation
Deliverable: Completed sketch work (including final work, mounting plan, creative reflection) | Quality standard: Overall coordination, wonderful details, high completion
