• Select work for analysis, choose a work from classical period classics for in-depth analysis, such as piano sonata or symphony movement by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, ensure the work has clear structure and is representative
• Conduct composer and work background research, understand composer's life, creative style, creation era of this work, creative background, premiere situation, historical position, as well as genre characteristics of this work
• Collect work-related materials, obtain scores, recordings, related analytical literature, performance versions, etc. of the work, establish research archive, prepare for subsequent in-depth analysis

This step focuses on analysis of thematic motives and musical materials of the work, understanding basic constituent elements of music.
