This course provides in-depth study of organizational principles and analytical methods in musical works. Topics include binary, ternary, compound ternary, rondo, variation, and sonata forms, as well as structural elements such as motivic development, tonal planning, and harmonic structure. Through analysis of classic works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, students master fundamental methods of formal analysis, understand how musical materials unfold and organize over time, and develop perceptual and analytical abilities for musical structure.
