The core task of this step is to systematically sort out basic music theory concepts and establish a complete music theory knowledge framework. Music theory is the cornerstone of music learning, with numerous interconnected concepts. Through systematic organization, organize scattered knowledge points into an organic knowledge network, clarify logical relationships between concepts, lay solid foundation for subsequent comprehensive application.

• Sort out core concept system of music theory, including properties of sound (pitch, duration, volume, timbre), notation, intervals, chords, modes, rhythm, meter, melody, tempo, dynamics, expression terms and other core content
• Establish knowledge structure map, clarify logical relationships and sequential order between various knowledge points, e.g.: sound → interval → chord → mode, rhythm → meter → rhythmic pattern, draw structure diagram of music theory knowledge system
• Conduct systematic review of basic concepts, revisit definition, classification, marking, rules of each knowledge point, ensure basic concepts are clear and accurate, without ambiguity and confusion

This step focuses on comprehensive application exercises of intervals and chords, deepening understanding of basic elements of polyphonic music. Intervals and chords are the foundation of harmony, and also key and difficult points in music theory learning. Through various forms of comprehensive exercises, proficiently master skills of interval and chord recognition, construction, inversion, aural discrimination, etc., achieving flexible application.

• Conduct comprehensive interval exercises, including interval recognition (degree and quality), interval construction, interval inversion, interval aural discrimination, enharmonic interval judgment, classification of diatonic and chromatic intervals and other exercises
• Conduct comprehensive chord exercises, practice recognition and construction of root position and inverted triads and seventh chords, chord degree and function labeling, chord aural discrimination, chord application in different modes, connection rules of various common chords
• Conduct comprehensive application exercises, practice intervals and chords in specific modal/tonal context, practice harmonic functional progressions, cadence judgment, simple four-part harmony writing, improve comprehensive application ability of knowledge

This step is the core phase of music theory learning, systematically mastering various modes/tonalities and their applications. Mode is the organizational foundation of music; different modes have different colors and expressive power. Through systematic study and practice, proficiently master structural characteristics and application rules of various modes such as major/minor system, folk modes, church modes, etc.

• Systematically master major/minor system, deeply understand structural characteristics, scale degree relationships, modal color of natural major, harmonic major, melodic major, natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor, practice mode identification and transition
• Learn folk modes and other modes, master characteristics, classification, identification methods of Chinese folk modes such as pentatonic scale, heptatonic scale, understand church modes, whole tone scale, chromatic scale and other modes
• Conduct tonality judgment and modulation analysis, practice judging mode/tonality of music through score or hearing, analyze scale degrees and chords in modes, identify simple modulation, tonicization phenomena, understand organizational logic of tonal music

This step focuses on practical application of rhythm/meter and notation, improving basic music reading and writing abilities. Rhythm is the temporal organization of music; notation is the written language for recording music. Through systematic rhythm training and notation practice, establish stable inner sense of beat, master standardized notation methods, improve music score reading and writing abilities.

• Conduct systematic rhythm and meter exercises, learn characteristics and strong/weak patterns of various meters (simple meter, compound meter, mixed meter, changing meter), practice aural discrimination and writing of various rhythmic patterns (syncopation, dotted notes, triplets, tuplets, rests, etc.)
• Conduct systematic review of notation, master various rules of staff notation, including standard writing of notes/rests, marking of clefs/key signatures/time signatures, use of accidental marks, difference between ties and slurs, meaning of various terminology symbols
• Conduct comprehensive notation/reading practice, practice accurately recording heard melodies (dictation), practice quickly and accurately reading scores for singing or playing, improve music reading/writing ability and efficiency

This step is the summary and application phase of music theory learning, through comprehensive exercises and simple work analysis, test and consolidate learned knowledge, apply music theory knowledge to actual music. Music theory knowledge ultimately serves musical practice; through analyzing real musical works, understand specific application of music theory knowledge in music, improve music understanding ability.

• Conduct music theory comprehensive test, complete a set of comprehensive exercises covering all knowledge points, test overall mastery level of music theory knowledge, find weak links, conduct targeted consolidation and strengthening
• Conduct simple music work analysis, choose a simple music work, use music theory knowledge to analyze its mode/tonality, melodic characteristics, rhythm/meter, harmonic progression, musical form structure, etc., combine theoretical knowledge with practice
• Summarize music theory learning system, systematically sort out all knowledge points, establish personal music theory knowledge system, formulate subsequent advanced learning plan (such as harmony, counterpoint, musical form, advanced music theory, etc.), point out direction for further study
