Implementation Steps

Steps

Step 1
Observation Subject Selection and Ethical Review
The core task of this step is to select the observation subject and complete the ethical review process, ensuring the research complies with psychological research ethics standards. Observation is the foundational method of developmental psychology research, and selecting appropriate subjects directly affects the validity and representativeness of research results. Informed consent, confidentiality, and minimal harm are basic ethical principles that must be followed in child research.

• Use purposive sampling to select 1 child aged 0-12 as observation subject based on research topic, considering representativeness of age, gender, and developmental background, and obtain basic child information and developmental background data
• Strictly follow psychological research ethics, design informed consent form, explain observation purpose, methods, duration, and data usage to parents, obtain written consent, and commit to strict confidentiality of all observation information
• Establish observation file including child basic information form, family background questionnaire, and developmental history record form, providing baseline data for subsequent analysis
Deliverable: Observation Subject File and Ethical Review Documents (including basic information form, informed consent form, background data form) | Quality standard: Representative subject selection, complete ethical procedures, detailed file information
Step 2
Systematic Observation Plan Design
The core task of this step is to design a scientific and systematic observation plan to ensure the validity and reliability of observation data. Developmental psychology research requires observations to have clear operational definitions, standardized recording methods, and sufficient observation duration. Triangulation (cross-validation through multiple observation methods) is an important strategy to improve observation validity.

• Determine core developmental domains for observation: cognitive development (Piaget's cognitive developmental stage characteristics), language development (vocabulary, syntax, pragmatics), emotional and social development (attachment, peer interaction, emotion regulation), motor development
• Adopt a mixed observation strategy combining time sampling and event sampling, design observation record forms including behavior category, occurrence time, duration, situational context, antecedents and consequences
• Develop an observation plan of no less than 4 weeks, observing 2-3 times per week, at least 30 minutes each time, covering different activity scenarios (free play, group activities, parent-child interaction, meals, naptime) to ensure comprehensiveness
Deliverable: Systematic Observation Plan (including observation domain definitions, observation record forms, observation schedule, reliability and validity validation description) | Quality standard: Clear and operable observation dimension definitions, standardized record forms, scientific time arrangement
Step 3
Observation Implementation and Data Coding
The core task of this step is to conduct systematic observation according to the plan and code the collected raw data. The quality of observation data directly determines the reliability of subsequent analysis; observers should maintain objectivity and neutrality, avoiding subjective bias. Coding analysis of qualitative data is the key stage for extracting meaningful information from raw materials.

• Use specimen records and anecdotal recording methods for observation, employing field notes plus post-observation recall supplementation, recording children's behavioral performance, language expression, and emotional responses as objectively and thoroughly as possible, avoiding interpretive descriptions
• Apply constant comparative method for three-level coding of observation data: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, extracting core categories and typical behavior patterns
• Establish observation log, systematically organizing field notes, photos, work scans, and other materials from each observation in chronological order, creating a child development timeline to visually present developmental changes
Deliverable: Observation Records and Coding Dataset (including observation log, coding scheme, typical behavior case library, development timeline) | Quality standard: Objective and detailed observation records, rigorous coding system, systematic and complete data organization
Step 4
In-Depth Analysis from Developmental Theory Perspectives
The core task of this step is to conduct in-depth analysis of observation results using classic developmental psychology theories, revealing the inherent patterns and characteristics of child development. Theoretical analysis is not simply applying theoretical labels, but using theoretical "lenses" to understand the developmental mechanisms behind children's behavior. Cross-analysis from multiple theoretical perspectives can present a more comprehensive and three-dimensional picture of children's development.

• Apply Piaget's cognitive developmental theory to analyze children's sensorimotor/preoperational/concrete operational stage characteristics, assessing cognitive development level from conservation tasks, classification ability, spatial cognition, and causal reasoning
• Apply Vygotsky's sociocultural theory to analyze children's performance within the Zone of Proximal Development, examining the promoting effects of adult scaffolding, peer interaction, and cultural tools on cognitive development
• Apply Erikson's psychosocial development theory and Bowlby's attachment theory to analyze children's emotional and social development characteristics, combining observation cases to demonstrate fit and differences between developmental stages and actual performance
Deliverable: Developmental Theory Analysis Report (including cognitive/language/social domain analysis, multi-theory comparison, development characteristics summary) | Quality standard: Accurate and appropriate theory application, in-depth case analysis, logical and evidence-based argumentation
Step 5
Assessment Report Writing and Educational Recommendations
The core task of this step is to write a complete child development assessment report and propose targeted educational recommendations. The ultimate goal of developmental assessment is to promote children's optimal development; educational recommendations should be based on assessment results and be scientific, targeted, and operable. Report writing should follow the developmental evaluation philosophy, acknowledging strengths while pointing out areas for growth.

• Write the report following the standard format of child development assessment reports, including basic information, assessment methods, domain-specific development assessment, comprehensive development level determination, and analysis of developmental strengths and challenges
• Based on developmental ecology theory, propose systematic educational recommendations from three levels: family environment, kindergarten education, and community resources, with each recommendation having theoretical basis and specific operational methods
• Design a follow-up development tracking plan including 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month tracking assessment points and suggested intervention measures, embodying developmental and dynamic evaluation philosophy
Deliverable: Child Development Assessment and Education Recommendation Report (including formal assessment report, education recommendation list, follow-up assessment plan) | Quality standard: Standard and complete report structure, scientific and feasible recommendations, specific and operable tracking plan
