IB Biology is a two-year secondary biology course offered by IBO, available at both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). SL covers six core topics: cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution and biodiversity, and human physiology. HL adds five more: nucleic acids, metabolism (respiration and photosynthesis), plant biology, genetics and evolution (extended), and animal physiology, plus one Option from neurobiology, biotechnology, ecology and conservation, or human physiology. It emphasizes experimental inquiry and interdisciplinary thinking — a key subject for medicine, biology, life sciences, pharmacy and agriculture.

The IB Biology IA is an individual experimental investigation worth 20% of the final grade. Students formulate a research question, design and conduct an experiment or data analysis, and produce a 6-12 page report (~10 hours of work). Assessment criteria cover personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation, and communication. Topics may include enzyme activity, plant growth, behavioral studies, ecological surveys, or molecular modeling.
