This course explores the relationship between language and culture, examining how language shapes social life and cultural identity. Topics include fundamental theories of linguistic anthropology, linguistic relativity, language and identity construction, language and power, ethnography of speaking, language endangerment and revitalization. Students learn to apply linguistic methods and anthropological perspectives to analyze everyday discourse practices.

Select a specific speech community or speech event (classroom discussion, market transactions, ritual oratory, online communication, etc.) and conduct participant observation and discourse recording. Apply linguistic anthropology theoretical frameworks to analyze the collected data, exploring how language use reflects and constructs social relations, cultural values, and identity. Submit a 4000-word research report.
