This course systematically examines the Western political thought tradition from ancient Greece to the present. Students read classic works by Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Marx, and other major thinkers. The course explores the historical evolution of core political concepts such as justice, liberty, equality, power, and democracy, as well as debates between different intellectual traditions. Through close reading and writing exercises, students develop textual interpretation skills and theoretical reasoning abilities.
学生选择一位政治思想家的核心文本,进行深入解读,并将其理论观点与一个当代政治议题(如分配正义、公民不服从、科技伦理等)相结合,撰写一篇研究论文。要求准确把握思想家的核心论点,展现文本细读能力,并对当代议题提出有理论深度的分析。论文字数约2000字。
Students select a core text by one political thinker, conduct an in-depth interpretation, and connect the theoretical perspective to a contemporary political issue (such as distributive justice, civil disobedience, or tech ethics). The paper should accurately capture the thinker's core arguments, demonstrate close reading skills, and offer theoretically informed analysis of the contemporary issue. Approximately 2000 words.
